Baggage loading at airports

Kaiserslautern / Wiesbaden / Worms, 11.10.2011: Loading of baggage in ULD containers or trolleys should be efficient, ergonomic and secure. However, at most airports baggage loading is still done manually, which is extremely physically demanding work. And all involved suffer the consequences: Too much physical work and strain limit performance of the baggage handlers or may even cause invalidity. Above average sickness levels and high turnover rates make the coordination and allocation of personnel resources a difficult task.

So using an automated baggage handling system appears to be an obvious solution. But baggage loading is a difficult task for machines as no two suitcases are the same and the transport containers also vary in shape and size. For human operators on the other hand it is an easy task to stack the varying items of luggage in a space saving manner, if only the mechanical part of the activity was not so physically demanding. This simple insight led to the development of the LoadCommander - an innovative system for semi-automated baggage loading at airports.

The LoadCommander is a joint development by the companies Eckelmann Aktiengesellschaft, Schmid Systemtechnik GmbH and Wipotec Wiege- and Positioniersysteme GmbH. At the inter airport europe 2011 (stand 1560, hall B5) this innovation will be presented to the public for the first time. The LoadCommander applies the concept of a practical allocation of tasks between human operator and machine consistently.
